FAQ's

BERNINA presser feet come in different shapes and sizes to fit various machines. As new machines are released, new feet are introduced too—but they aren’t one-size-fits-all. To make sure you get the right foot for your machine, check the compatibility details listed in each product description.

Not all sewing machine presser feet are universal. While many machines use the same type of feet, some require special ones. This depends on whether your machine has a low or high shank.

BERNINA machines don’t fall into the standard low or high shank categories. Instead, they have their own unique clip-on system that’s specific to BERNINA machines. If you have a high shank machine, you probably bought it for that reason and would already be aware of it.

New BERNINA presser feet have red markings on the sticker and foot number, while older ones have black markings. The new style also has a squared-off top with a small notch cut out at the back of the shank.

A standard stitch length is 2.5 mm, but for thicker fabrics, a 3.5 mm stitch works better. If you're sewing heavy materials or multiple layers, you might need an even longer stitch. If that doesn’t work, try using a small zig-zag stitch instead.

A walking foot is great for slippery fabrics because it helps feed both layers evenly, preventing wavy seams. If your fabric keeps sliding off the table, try placing a towel underneath to keep it steady.

To get the best results, adjust the presser foot pressure based on your fabric type. Increase the pressure for thin fabrics and decrease it for thicker ones. The process may vary slightly depending on your machine, but the general steps are the same:

  1. Lower the presser foot lever.
  2. Turn the presser foot pressure dial (usually located at the back of the machine).
  • Pressure can be set between levels 1 and 4.
  • Use levels 1-2 for thick fabrics and levels 3-4 for thin fabrics.

The right pressure setting depends on the fabric’s thickness and type:

  • Reduce pressure if the fabric stretches, has multiple layers that don’t feed evenly, or gets damaged by the feed dogs.
  • Increase pressure if the fabric is slipping and not feeding correctly.
  • Once you're done sewing, reset the dial to 3 (the standard setting).
  • If you're still not getting the desired result, check your machine's manual to ensure you're using the correct presser foot for your stitch.
